What are homecoming mums?

Homecoming Mums (typically for girls) and Homecoming Garters (typically for boys) are a Taylor High School tradition showing school pride around homecoming weekend. It originally started as a fresh chrysanthemum with ribbons. Today, they display a variety of trinkets and items representing the students' interests, hobbies, organizations and any items they'd like to personalize their mum/garter.

Who gets a mum/garter?

Taylor High School Students, staff and alumni are all welcome to wear a mum or garter! You can buy one yourself and customize it.

Sometimes, mums/garters are bought among friends, or by a parent or relative. Mini Mums are great gifts for alumni, teachers, staff and families!

Sometimes, mums and garters are purchased by Homecoming dates (for example, the girl would order a garter for her date and he would order a mum for her), and they do an "exchange" before homecoming weekend.

Note that you don't need to have a "date" to Homecoming to wear a mum or garter!

What kind of mum/garter should I get?

Mums and garters are available in a variety of sizes and options. Taylor tradition is that Freshmen and Sophomores wear blue/white/silver mums, Juniors wear silver/white mums, and Seniors wear gold/white mums.

When do I wear it?

Mums and garters are usually worn to school all day on the Friday (Oct. 15) before (or day of) the Homecoming football game and at the Homecoming Pep Rally. It is also worn at the Homecoming football game (Oct. 15).

Mums and garters are NOT worn to the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night (Oct. 16)... that is more of a semi-formal affair, and if flowers are worn at all, they are boutonnieres, corsages or wrist corsages, from a florist...

How do I wear it?

Mums are worn with a ribbon/strap that goes around your neck. Sometimes they are pinned on denim overalls. Mini-mums are pinned to your clothes. Garters are worn on the arm.

How do I get one?

We are no longer taking custom orders. But pre-made mums and garters are still on sale at our Mums Table. Parent volunteers from the JET Band Boosters will be happy to assist you with making selections. You will be able to view the Mum Mobile (display cabinet) at lunch Main Commons on selected days.

Payments may be made online through PayPal or by cash at school. All proceeds from mum sales benefit Taylor Band... so besides the fun and school spirit you'll display by wearing a mum/garter on Homecoming, the funds go to a great cause!

When can I drop by the Mum Sales table at school?

We're there during lunch periods between 10:30am-12:30pm.
